THE HOUSE ON THE SHORE

Another involved Irish shoreline mystery (see The Lost Island and The San Sebastian) is told by you Jim O'Malley, 16, who is sent by his mother to seek out his miserly uncle, Martin Walsh, in Cloghanmore. Arriving on foot after a two day hike over the mountains, Jim is made wary by the townspeoples' unkind remarks about Walsh and is even more on edge when he finds his uncle's house empty and overhears some mysterious talk between Pietro and Miguel, an Italian and a South American, whose exporting business has brought their small boat to the town. To his surprise Jim finds Walsh up a tree, hiding from Pietro and Miguel who have come to ""bargain"" for his cache of gold cups. For years Walsh had been content alone with his cups, but his discovery by the two ruffian sailors had forced him into stealing some of the town funds in hopes they would take him with them to Brazil. But evil intentions are realized and Jim, happens along in time to prevent complete disaster. A neatly plotted Irish study.
