Career and independence versus marriage and hometown life are rather sharply outlined here. Caroline Spaulding, just out of school, is beset by the wishes of her stern parents, by falling in love with the wrong boy, by the inner compulsion to make a success of herself at becoming a buyer with a New York department store. Breck, a rich boy who lives near Caroline's suburb, Sudbury, is the temporary winner of her affections over a faithful Johnnie, this romance being carried on during weekends in and out of New York after Caroline has persuaded her parents to let her rent a city apartment with a friend. Disillusion with Breck, however, is happily followed by Caroline's advancement to head of stock in the college department of her store and a realization that she loves and eventually wants to marry Johnnie. A fast moving tale with adventure following adventure in swift and vivid succession. The love scenes, personal problems, zesty descriptions of the selling world (here of good vocational value) are good dishes for the romantic, ambitious, temporarily uncertain young.
