HERMAN MELVILIE: Journal of a Visit to London & the Continent

Melville's granddaughter has edited for first publication this brief journal kept by Melville of a visit to Europe, the immediate purpose of which was to secure a publisher for White Jacket. This day by day record of the crossing, of London, is necessarily concerned with a good deal of incidental and passing detail, but in his commentary on places and people, he is always observant, responsive. There are only some eighty odd pages in the Journal. The balance of the book contains considerable annotation and additional reference material. The market will be almost wholly Melville devotees.
