FINDING OUT ABOUT WHALES

In the Science Explorers series, a glossy browsing book that poses questions about seven species of whales. The most interesting aspect of this title is the current research on blue, humpback, gray, beluga, and killer whales. For each species, Kelsey presents a handsome fullcolor photograph, two or three questions in red typeface, and a column of research notes in green. Each question is then discussed in an illustrated spread. The answers are brief and unsatisfactory, while the research notes are marginal. This is, however, a snappy, interesting approach to current science; give it to children as a good first peek, then send true whale enthusiasts on to other sources for more background information on the various species.
