PORTRAIT OF CAROLINE

A standard British brand of lightweight merchandise, this tells of Carrie Mason's lifelong love for the son of her family's patrons. The coachman's daughter, Carrie fell in love with Charles Adamson at six; later she watched him marry the pleasure loving and ungiving Lady Meriel, while Carrie turns to Peter. Peter dies, and Lady Meriel ends her extravagant ways hopelessly invalided -- while Charles belatedly recognizes his love for Carrie. Unable to marry, they go to the West Indies where they live as man and wife, until with Meriel's death they are free to return to England. Acceptable romance for renters.
