SCIENCE IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD

The dime store and the kitchen can yield up the scientific tools suggested here for observations of flora, fauna, the sky, animal and bird life. The author talks the language of children. She suggests practical experiments which most children could manage from fourth grade on through higher grades, without adult help. How to make a telescope of an oatmeal box, construction of a weather vane, maintenance of a bird feeding station are all covered here. Very useful, clearly illustrated, this tends to foster understanding and observation of Nature at work.
