DRINK TO THE HUNTED

A novel of Germany between the wars is not an easy thing to sell, but this transcends some of that difficulty in a substantial sympathetic, provocative first novel, introducing a youthful writer who knows the two continents of which she writes....A fully developed novel of place, period and people --a Germany over which the shadow of war slowly creeps providing part of the setting for the restless, rootless, unstable lives of Frederike and her daughter Laurie. Frederike had married, after the last war, an American, Michael Bailey, but found herself at odds with America and Michael, and returned to the continent with Laurie, her child. Years of changing places -- and changing lovers for volatile, temperamental, indulgent Frederike -- and of conflict for Laurie, an American in Germany, a German in America, wandering back and forth, drawn always back again by possessive Frederike, whom she loves and hates. Finally, trapped in Germany with the onset of war, Laurie stays on, sees Frederike split with her Nazi lover, jeopardize their safety with careless disregard of the regime. Then Laurie finds two true friends, Andrea, who hates Germany, and Peter, in the Underground. With Peter's being drafted, Laurie determines to return to America, leaving her mother behind. Authentic, ample detail of life within Germany -- nature characterization.
