ELLERY QUEEN'S AWARDS: 11th Series

The omnium gatherum of short stories in the field of detective, crime and mystery- this again hits the jackpot with surprisingly varied fare, and with less in the field of straight detection than one expects. The psychological mystery adroitly handled for brief span stands out. And there are some completely offbeat stories that approach the subject through new channels. The names include some tried and true:- Stanley Ellin, Thomas Flanagan, Veronica Parker Johns, James Yaffe, William Lindsay Gresham -- writers who have developed the short suspense tales to the point of art. There are a healthy number of ""firsts"" with Michael Forrestier giving evidence of a gift that should go beyond this field.
