Broken Arrow, the picture, was made from the novel Blood Brother, and its following success has created an interest in the Apache chief, Cochise, and Tom Jeffords, the American who sought to build lasting friendship with him. While the original novel was recommended at time of publication for teen age reading, it was confessedly overburdened with detail which perhaps justifies Arnold revising the text for juvenile consumption. He has omitted the romance and done a sound job of editing his own text, tightening the pace of story, limiting the number of incidents. (Probably the original story would have benefitted by similar treatment in the first place). But again this raises the question:- how often can today's novels justify rewrite jobs for an age group that can take the originals in their stride?
