THE WHITE HOUSE PANTRY MURDER

It's Christmas of 1941; the US has joined Britain in war against the Nazis; Churchill is conferring with Franklin Roosevelt at the White House, and an unknown man is found stabbed to death in the pantry freezer. Secret Service agents Gerald Baines and Domenic Deconcini are worried by the dead man's ability to penetrate the supposedly tight security inside and outside the White House--and they're horrified by the discovery of telephone taps and a gun hidden in the rooms of the President and aide Harry Hopkins. The killing of a second intruder by agent Baines raises more questions than it answers, but, eventually, Eleanor Roosevelt's sharp memory and gentle probing put the investigation on track and help prevent a last-minute assassination. Neatly plotted, convincing and workmanlike--a huge improvement over the author's previous Murder at Hobcaw Barony.
