THE LOST BIRTHDAY

Australia half a century ago is the setting of a rather shrill little story that could have been good fiction if more pains had been taken with reality than with sentiment. Its heroine is little Myee Besser whose father is a country doctor for a small town some 250 miles from Sidney. On her seventh birthday, Myee and her family go to visit the Stuarts who are sheep farmers, for their daughter Aileen has her seventh birthday on the same day. But on the day, the two girls go for a walk, get lost and spend some harrowing hours in the bush, before Myee's dog, Patch, aids their families in a successful search. Inconsequential.
