EPITAPH FOR A SPY

From the more sombre, sinister Judgment on Deltchev, Coffin for Dimitrios, etc. this offers a lighter variant of the spy stalk in the dilemma of Monsieur Vadassy, a timid teacher of languages vacationing in Nice, who is arrested as a spy and used as an accessory by the Naval Intelligence to find the camera which has occasioned this predicament. In the pension where he is staying, and circulating among a polyglot lot of English, Swiss, Americans, etc.- Vadassy bluffs and bumbles- and on occasion displays an impromptu inventiveness in his attempt to trap the traitor... An amusing, agile performance, which replaces terror with wit, and balances off enigma with the gentle guilelessness of its reluctant secret agent.
