Here is as valuable a piece of research as has been made available to the public in a long time. In response to a request from the Presbyterian Church that a study be made of the validity and pertinence of the church ministry to today's family, Dr. Roy W. Fairchild of San Francisco Theological Seminary, and Dr. J. C. Wynn of the Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, undertook jointly this exploration in depth of the changing Protestant family and its current challenge to the church which in so many ways seems not to be aware of the change. A Biblical perspective is provided, as well as an historical resume of Protestant perspectives on family issues from the time of the Reformation. But the major concern of the writers is to provide a thoroughgoing, descriptive analysis of today's family, its needs and potential, as well as its problems, and also a report on the often futile attempts of the church to redeem family conflict with vague moralisms. Within the family, say the authors, members must be gospel bearers to one another, and then to the outside world. This implies sufficient training and preparation, a task which the church at the moment does feebly, if at all. The book is a well documented, powerful challenge to all Protestant ministers and churches to a more effective ministry to and through families when the facts such as this book offer are made known, verified, accepted and acted upon for the greater glory of God.
