Published under the auspices of the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe, Inc., this collection of essays points up the outstanding factors and features of the Jew's immigration and assimilation in a new land, then and now. In colonial times the Jews came in lesser numbers, found their economic incentive in peddling-later merchandising, and while identifying themselves with America- still retained the culture of the old world. The 1850's saw the advent of anti-semitism; the 1870's the upsetting effects of the mass immigration of Eastern European Jews, and again in 1933, after Hitler came to power. But along with the many barriers, religious, racial cultural, there is the gradual accommodation of this people and along with the emotional adaptation, the cultural contributions they were to make- the outstanding positions they were to occupy not only in industry, but also banking, publishing, philanthropy, etc...An orientation which will have its value largely for Jews.
