HORSES FOR THE GENERAL

A story of the American Revolution, warmly told, illumines part of what happened during Washington's maneuvers on the lower Hudson, through the eyes of Lem Devries. Sixteen but too short to enlist, Lem wins the trust and friendship of Corporal Jones of the cavalry and is allowed to go along and care for the horses as a fair compensation for his disappointment. His determination sees him through to an eventual post in the cavalry but not before still more friends have been made- a family struggling to start anew in the Grants and the girl whose horse Lem rides out on- and returns.
