DOSTOEVSKI: The Making of a Novelist

This is a study of that confusing, ambivalent, difficult personality, Dostoevski, through his works -- a litery evaluation rather than a biography, but one that is both comprehensive and elastic. There is little of his personal life save a mentioning of external events as they took place. The emphasis is on the psychology of the man as it influenced and is revealed by his writing, a dualistic spirit who was never to breach the impasse between head and heart, faith and reason. From Poor Folk, which revealed his determination to ""depict all the depths of the human soul"", to his great masterpieces at the end of his life, his works are analyzed. Rewarding, but for the scholar and student primarily.
