STORIES OF JESUS

Eleven familiar New Testament stories, including the coming of the shepherds and the Wise Men to worship the newborn child, through favorite episodes in Jesus' life and ministry, a few of the best-known parables, to the entrance into Jerusalem and the resurrection -- here told by an experienced story teller and teacher. There's reverence and love in the telling, and the inclusion of much of the traditional wording gives it a homely ring. I'd suggest use with younger children than the 7-11 indicated by the publisher. There's occasional over- simplification (an example is the handling of the story of the prodigal son) which lends itself better to the read aloud level. Kurt Wiese's illustrations in four color are uneven in value, and tend to be too static and conventional for my taste. But the book meets a real need for home reading as well as Sunday School.
