A collection of tales from Negro folk lore, based on stories told by Alice Cannon, a cook in a North Carolinian kitchen to the neighborhood children. It is sort of a Negro Paul Bunyan, heroic, absurd, with superhuman dimensions and powers. This character holds the tales together. The dialect and the local color make these stories that should be read or told by someone who knows the Negro race. The illustrations, by Fritz Eichenberg, unfortunately, will tend to confuse the child reader, although for the adult they have a quality that fits the grotesquerie of the text. Don't use with children who scare easily -- and preferably use through adult medium always.
