As official observer for the U.S. Navy, Carlson succeeded in seeing what went on behind the lines in China. He crossed the path of many familiar figures in American and English journalism and American letters (Edgar Snow, John Gunther, Agnes Smedley, Freda Utley); he spent time with the leading figures in Chinese military and political circles. He traveled with the North Route Army, he lived within the Fifth War Zone, he saw at close hand the leaders and members of the Kwangsi, the Kuomintang and the Communist groups. He analyzed the three forms the war would take, -- active defense, guerilla warfare, and the final phase, after attrition had worn down Japanese offensive, and the cementing of conflicting forces within China had been completed, the populace educated to cooperative resistance, the problems of supplies and industrial life solved.
