Jane and the Nodding Mandarin she wants from an antique store will make readers nod themselves to sleep before she ever gets near it. Immature for twelve, Jane worships Clare Linden, a ballerina she thinks of as the mandarin's daughter. Jane's talents are in swimming and singing but during this British shore summer she also walks a dog, talks to tinny Tim and makes a friend of a straw man villain. When her ballerina idol is hospitalized. Jane (after a rather suspicious few days in bed) resolves to give her the porcelain idol in hopes of speeding her recovery. Clare Linden is touched and Jane gets to meet her. Frankly, Jane seems a little touched too, with starry eyes and stilted crushes.
