BACKGROUND IN TENNESSEE

A book combining many literary genres, almost imperceptibly blended, -- history, autobiography, memoirs, spanning the pioneering days of her great-grand-fathers on to her own childhood. Occasional philosophical interpretation of life and change. Back and forth, old and new, Indian days and the more civilized south, customs, society, tradition, people, education, travel and so on. Informal but penetrating. Passages of sly, subtle humor. Stylistically difficult -- tortuous sentences with over-punctuation. But, nonetheless the charm and color and delicacy come through.
