SANDY THE RED DEER

Of the Highlands of Scotland and the red deer that live there, this, in straightforward prose tells of their life as Roddie and Flora, children of a stalker, watch Sandy and the hind, Sheena, play and fight and grow up during the seasons. Full of the feel of the country, packed with information about deer and all their habits, this is slimly story, largely natural history of specialized appeal. Imported from England, the text is full of technical terms relating to deer, but all simply defined, and with no basic hurdles in language for the confirmed reader of nature lore; the illustrations by Kiddell-Monroe, in soft black and reddish brown, have a sweep in keeping with the high hills.
