Still smarter than Smart as the Devil (1975), this is another small piece of guignol with a similar kind of victimization proceeding from those fissures of the psyche. Eyes begins with a voice on the telephone, that of a young woman Joan who's been watching Stu at the same apartment level across the street--Stu who is a quiet, orderly, latently anxious young man with another girl in and out of his life. But in between the telephone calls and silences, Joan becomes Johanna, Johanna who is a much more embodied presence in Stu's life, Johanna who keeps separating into Joan so that you wonder which one will win. That's the hook to go with those eyes, two or four, but it's all stitched together with calculated cleverness.
