ONE OF OUR H-BOMBS IS MISSING

Flora Lewis' contained, collected recap of the ""atomic accident"" which shook the world in January, 1966 has a small detonation of its own. She follows the SAC B-52 to the Spanish coast where it collided with a tanker while refueling and crashed, spewing out four H-bombs near the ancient village of Palomares, until then undisturbed by the modern world. To find the bombs, American airmen converged on the town, which faced the threat of radioactividad; three were quickly recovered, the fourth found only after arduous search underwater in a Thunderball sequence. The after-effects were political, on a national scale, socio-economic locally where a plague of uncertainty remains with the townfolk (""It doesn't make me happy to live here any more""). And the aftereffects of this book are likely to be minimal, despite the questions it raises so effectively.
