LAND BETWEEN: The Middle East

The highest standards are achieved in this study of the lands of the Middle East, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Iraq. This strikes a happy balance. It never ""talks down"" to its audience, yet the material has been sifted for maximum appeal to boys and girls. From housing to handwriting, from topography to costumes, this covers the general area with interesting details and unusual descriptive power. Today in the lands of the Bible and the Koran, rug weavers and leather tanners pursue their ancient arts. And shutters are closed within the balconies above narrow thronged lanes against noonday heat. Headgear, here, reveals much about a person's social status. Since there is little available for children on these countries, it is especially gratifying to see such excellence.
