A delightful and distinguished volume of verses which have had initial individual appearances in the Saturday Review, the Virginia Quarterly, the New Yorker, etc. Miss Howard has a woman's eye for small things, and intimate ones, but she has the poet's sense of eternal values. A child sleeping, an Audubon print, the mystic advent of spring- all these provoke a poetic talent which is never obscure, but also is never trite. Her mastery of her medium, and her excellent technique in short verse forms give elegance to her thought, and her book should find a select audience for whom- say- the poetry of May Sarton has its appeal.
