Coincidence crowds thick as the gorse on Ben Lomond in this Victorian romance which sees Janet, after some years of cold porridge, reunited with Simon, her first love. Following her mother's death, Janet is tricked out of her home by a wicked sister-in-law; she moves to her cool father in Glasgow, where his new wife deals her into marriage with a dismal peer. Assualted and otherwise plagued, she runs away and is presumed dead. Then, after a winter in a peasant hut, she becomes servant to none other than the mother of Simon, whom she loved way back when. But why go on--the contrivances and cliches never stop.
