THE BOOK OF KELLS

All the full-page illustrations and a representative selection of the profuse, intricate ornamentation of the Gospel-book of the monastery of St. Columba at Kells, probably written and illuminated by Celtic monks in the 9th century. Majestic hieratic iconographs of the four Evangelists, reproductions of the ""Irish script,"" accompanied by some of the preliminaries usual at the time -- canontables, breves causae and argumenta. Nearly as glorious and awe-inspiring as the original.
