THE LAW OR THE GUN

....is the principle at stake when Mormon settlers try to make a place for themselves in Clay County, Missouri, and find almost their only champion in Alex Doniphan, a lawyer in Lincoln's tradition who was actually practicing at the time. Told through the eyes of young Clancy Tolbert, a family friend of Doniphan's, the story takes on a kind of rugged urgency as the townspeople's ugly emotions simmer and come to a boiling point against the Mormons. Though Doniphen's oratory and command are able to avert real disaster and establish principles of freedom, there is a sense of tragedy when the Mormons, under Joseph Smith, know they must move on.
