THE SEVENTH MONTH

A huge, mushy novel about a young man's search for something-or-other, mainly carried forth in amatory gymnastics. Viet-vet Tony, unhappily living st home with miserable Pa who que serra-ed his way through years of crippled impotence after a construction accident; Wretched Ma, still cheery in spite of hard work, disappointments and cancer; and brother Rico, who sets hair but really wants to paint. Tony teaches at Big Neck High School, but life begins at three o'clock as he gets a Radcliffe girl, Anne, with child, pushes her on to an abortion. While Anne has second thoughts about the worth or degree of devotion of her lover, Tony falls into just about everywhere with Erica, wealthy and married to half-a-man Jack. When Erica becomes pregnant (by whom?) Tony cools it just as he had slipped away from Anne. Ma's death of cancer brings Tony to further conclusions which seem to add up to it's-a-rough-life-but-it's-all-true-so-you-gotta-find-your-pattern. It's a very good argument for keeping teachers off the streets
