That sportswriter scorekeeper again records the highspots and slumps of another team through the seasons and its leading players and managers. An enthusiastic ball town, their club became known as the Orioles in 1883, in the '90's acquired one of the most famous figures in the game- combative John McGraw, and by the close of the decade won three successive pennants. Taken over by the American League in 1900, and then put out of the Majors for more than 50 years, the Orioles still were the team which gave Babe Ruth his start and in the '20's took further pennants. 1953, when the St. Louis Browns came to Baltimore as the Orioles returned this city to the American League, raised high hopes not altogether justified by the 1954 season which the club ended almost in the cellar, but still holds hopes for a comeback under a new and magnetic manager....
