Another in the excellent Rivers of America series, written by a man who not only knows his river from careful study, but has experienced it at first hand in all its moods. Remember his Cruise of the Betsy Ann? This starts with an outboard motor trip down the Allegheny from Olean, New York, to Pittsburgh, giving nice detail of the nature of the river and its individuality. Then follows the history and the personalities and the feel of succeeding periods. There is a good deal about Pittsburgh and the oil boom of that section (paralleling, but with lighter touch, Asbury's The Golden Flood -- See Page 93). There is flood control, keel and steamboating, rivermen and river yarns, interspersed with anecdotes and reminiscences of the author and his family. Very pleasant, personal and buoyant addition to the series.
