WINDLESS SKY

Not for a wide sale, but an interesting book heralded by an excellent European press, published in England with enthusiastic backing by Virginia Woolfe. The author will bear watching...This is not a not a novel in the accepted sense, more a still-life of the savage Lutheran household of the Hedmans who ruled a river settlement in American backwoods some sixty years ago. Almost a Biblical conception, the good and the bad etched in sharp black and white. The author's talent comes out more in the recreation of the atmosphere of the bleak, dark, lonely spot, and in his sombre rhythmical prose.
