In close parallel to Gerald kersh' Faces in a Dusty Picture, this is again a concentrated close-up of an English battalion before -- and during -- an offensive action in the Middle East. Less of a composite than the Kersh, the interest here is centered largely on Geoff Harrison, a Company Commander, whose fear of death -- and of fear -- had made a coward of him at Dunkirk, and who is now hoping to redeem his weakness. The speculations of the men on the action ahead, the thoughts of home, the tension of the last hours, and finally the big show and Harrison's death as he retreats from fire to get permission to withdraw his men -- with the final estimate of his bravery, or cowardice, still in conjecture..Of its kind, well done.
