WEATHER FORECASTING

In a haze about those weather screens and maps on TV? And those winded terms? Gibbons clears it all up. With the sentence ""The weather is always changing,"" the book begins and ends, as Gibbons takes us on a circular ride through the seasons, talking about cloud types, weather balloons, storms, and other phenomena. The path information takes before reaching us from radio, phone, and TV is given primary importance as the roles of meteorologists and immediate/extended forecasters are explained. Some of the technical names of those machines are hard to say (try ""anemometer""), but their difficulty is buffeted by easy-to-grasp definitions (the gismo above ""measures wind speed""). Clear, concise labels and a breezy sense of excitement make this sunny book one children and their parents can learn from and put to immediate use.
