This is an excellent collection of Geoffrey Hellman's New Yorker pieces. They are expectedly cheerfully ironic and informed. For the most part, they are Profile reportage and whether Mr. Hellman is shading in the megalomaniacal activities of Norman Bel Geddes or the nasty shenanigans of enfant terrible Diego Rivera, he always has a bonanza of facts to present. On the buffet are large portions of the lives of the above along with Alexander Calder, Frank Crownshield, aviculturist Jean Delacour, Le Corbusier, Alfred A. Knopf, the Washington National Gallery's Chester Dale, and the Museum of Modern Art's Rene d'Harnoncourt. Along with these longer pieces, there are occasional talky tidbits on miscellaneous subjects served up with shining expertise.
