THE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS OF YOUR OLD DOG

Whitney, following in the footsteps of his author/veterinarian father, Leon, writes in an easy, conversational style, and hammers home his points with conviction and vigor. Old dogs, he contends, do need special care, but it needn't make unreasonable demands on the owner. The key to continued good health (illness calls for different regimens) is, not surprisingly, the regular veterinary visit and a sensible diet (he is against canned dog food and is fierce about overfeeding). There are chapters dealing with illness, common and uncommon, with a few words (not nearly enough) about symptoms, treatment and prevention; veterinarians and their clients; and that tragic moment--the death of one's pet. Although the author deals more with generalities than specifics, this is a comforting approach to keeping the gaffer ambling peacefully through his last years.
