SHADOWPLAY

Everyone has probably experimented with hand shadows at one time or another, but Prasanna Rao, an Indian performer and a new Sesame Street regular, practices particularly elegant and creative variations on the art. Here, preceded only by Mendoza's two-page foreword, Rau takes the stage to show his interpretations of the familiar animal repertoire -- and of such unusual subjects as Napoleon, a taxi driver and ""people in the park."" Each figure is shown in shadowgraphy silhouette with a photograph of Rao's hands on the facing page; most of his finger acrobatics will be too difficult for children under ten or so, but those who respond to the challenge should find this stylishly minimal presentation worthwhile.
