Two very satisfactory handbooks for the home gardener with not too extensive a purse, and with limitations of space and help and time. In other words -- gardening on a ration -- with due confidence in the importance of beauty as well as utility in a garden. Both books follow parallel patterns:- when, how, where, which -- whether using perennials as a basic background, or annuals for the necessary succession of bloom. Soil -- exposure fertilization -- cultivation -- diseases, all treated adequately for the amateur. I found particularly useful the excellent balance each author keeps on old favorites and new-comers; on flowers for decoration, flowers for cutting; on planning for succession of bloom, texture and color. Good advice on cutting, arranging, on church plantings. Excellent lists. Not too technical -- nor yet too general.
