BOBBY BONDS: Rising Superstar

Speedy and strong, Bobby Bonds has always been a player's player; Hank Aaron, no less, has singled Bonds out as having ""the ideal body"" for the sport. Unfortunately, Bonds has never had either the team or the one socko season that would win him the same degree of acclaim from the public, and the special interest of Sullivan's story lies in its recognition of the frustration that can hound even a record chasing all-star--all the more poignant because much of Bonds' disappointment is on behalf of his mentor and hero, Willy Mays, whose treatment by the ""young Giants"" organization Bonds could never quite forgive. A slightly squinteyed look at stardom, an ingratiating view of a star to watch.
