What people are more fascinating than the Basque! This gives a marvelous picture of their life up to the Spanish Revolution. Narbik Aguirre is a Spanish Basque shepherd who becomes an American citizen in San Diego just after Pearl Harbor. The major part of the book is laid in his home country in which he has such pride. There are fine descriptions of his life with his sheep and dogs, pelota, a splendid funeral, , the holy city of the Basques and its famous tree, his sister's wedding, and Basno George, a grand character, a Basque who has moved to Idaho. The story starts in 1942 then goes back to 1933. It is most moving to realize what our country means to people of this sort, and should make young readers more proud than ever of the United States and what it can offer.
