Most garden bookshelves have at least a representation from Gertrude Jekyll's ooks; after all she was the prime inspiration for gardeners in the United States for a generation and more. She published fourteen books between 1899-1925, full of practical advice, peppery impatience with poor taste, and a genuine sense of beauty, form, color, design. Here is an anthology drawn from these books, a book to dip into rather than to use as a guide to performance. There is an immense amount of sound scholarship here, of shaped personal experience, of inspiration, but it would not be an easy ook from which to pinpoint procedures in concise form, though much is there scattered throughout the extracts. Anyhow, Gertrude Jekyll is essential reading for other dedicated gardeners.
