WINDOWS ON WILDLIFE

Visits to six natural-habitat exhibits in the US, including the Bronx Zoo's Jungle-world, Penguin Encounter at Sea World in Orlando, and the Hippoquarium in Toledo. Going behind the scenes, readers see how the exhibits are designed and built to replicate natural settings that keep the animals comfortable--as well as provide visitors and scientists opportunities to study the species. The authors point out that, with many animals becoming endangered through habitat destruction, babies raised in these ""natural"" habitats are extremely important for survival of the species. But though the habitats are more humane than conventional cages, conservationists will note the many references to the dependence of the animals on their keepers, which calls into question the habitats' true authenticity. Still, young readers will enjoy these brief looks at new zoos and the many full-color photos of the animals and their simulated settings. Glossary; index.
