TURNING OFF

Edison Cook graduates from a drug rehabilitation camp to a job at Safari Land where he finds that one of his elephant charges, Geeta, harbors the same distrust towards him that he feels for the straight world. Edison also faces some human opposition in the form of the snake handler Kurt, who leaves his roaches around the elephant barn, but the inevitable confrontation is bloated to fantastic proportions by a flash flood that makes Edison and his trained elephants instant heroes and leaves even the cynical Kurt saluting him with a grudging ""Power to the pachyderms!"" The whole rap is together enough to pull along even reluctant readers, but the ending is such a let down that, like Edison, they're likely to wonder whether all the effort was worthwhile.
