THE HANDSOME ROAD

Deep Summer by this author (January 15, 1937 bulletin, page 24) received favorable reviews, and this new book shows improvement over the first in the story of the parallel lives of two women, one inheriting the traditions of the Old South and the other trying to pull herself out of the ""poor white"" class. The Civil War levels them, and both make their way according to their natures, but the gentlewoman insists on continuing the ideal of the Southern gentleman planter in her son, while the other visions the heights which her son may attain in the new order of things. A readable job.
