RETURN ENGAGEMENT

Courtly comedy which combines a certain charm with humor for the story of Sophie van Eyck, once a great beauty, a great actress, a great courtesan, as the war propels her back to New England with her granddaughter, Vicky. Sophie also brings with her Sir Charles, her butler, Marcel, her portrait painter, and quickly adds to her entourage of old loves and present dependents with Basil, a writer, and Godfrey, her former lead in the theatre. The polyglot, polygamous household is sufficient to interfere with Vicky's engagement to a New England boy, as Salty's family questions Sophie's standards and Vicky's legitimacy. To salvage Vicky's marriage, the men prepare to leave and Sophie, implying royal blood for Vicky to offset the stigma of illegitimacy, squares the record. Light.
