STORIES FOR FUN AND ADVENTURE

The astute editors here successfully grapple with a problem plaguing educators throughout the country -- the dearth of fiction available for the slow older reader,- stories whose content and terminology though rendered in simplified vocabulary will appeal to the interest levels of older children. This collection helps to fill the bill. Varied in subject, setting and length they include a warm tale of a boy and his new found pup, an exciting depiction of John Colter's heroic journey through the Blackfoot country on the Lewis and Clark expedition, a prairie adventure of cattle rustlers and the brave young man who routed them, the funny exploits of ""six foolish fishermen"", a baseball story, a mysterious tale of a snake in a bottle and at least ten more. Among the contributors are Elizabeth Coatsworth, Virginia Lee Burton, Marion Renick, Glen Rounds and Beverly Cleary. The specialized character of this compendium transcends specific age levels -- we've placed it in Junior High category.
