The figure of Theodore Parker is not a familiar one to the modern generation. The giants among whom he lived -- Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, etc. -- have overshadowed his memory. But -- he stood for much that was dynamite in his day; he helped mold intellectual history; he was part of his period. And in Commager he has found a biographer worthy of his material. He has given his substance reality -- has built a background that breathes. Whether or not he has other plans up his sleeve we know not. But the man can write -- and we shall watch for his name with interest. Meantime in Theodore Parker he has made a definite contribution to the biography of the period.
