TURKEY AT THE STRAITS

The preface is excellent, and creates warm anticipation for what is to come, and the first two chapters live up to anticipation, outlining succinctly the economic forces involved in the importance of the early history of the Straits. Then the balance of the book turns out to be little more than a competent factual digest of treaties bearing on the Straits, with little attention to the economic interpretation, and over-emphasis on diplomatic tangles. Conspicuous by its absence:- the effect of the Bagdad-Berlin Railroad, the history and development of Danube river traffic, the part played by German industrial progress and the corresponding weakening of Russian influence, the effect of the economic boycott on Austria, of local industrialization in the East, of the economic consequences of the world war. There is still a book to be done.
