Take McHale's Navy out of uniform and plop them into the Merchant Marines and you'll have the slapstick effect intended here. Unfortunately this becomes rather more swamped than switched on as the scene goes from port to pot and back again. The crew Bilko-ing things up, consists of Heavy (so named because), Nick (the handsome one), Stringbeans (the long tall Negro), and Mack (ex-farm boy). Nick keeps the B-Girls busy. Heavy keeps hustling and Stringbeans and Mack are the hangers-on as they confront lisping bosuns, storms, saloon fights, and submarines. There are two seaworthy scenes Nick involved in representing the Union and checking out the captain's table measuring pork chops etc., to make sure everyone is eating equal. . . and Heavy being hoisted on deck in a net after an illegal trip ashore. Actually all the book really needs is a camera, which it will probably find. Or Scopitone perhaps?
